An AI budgeting app that can't leak your data and can't make up your numbers
Every finance app is adding an AI assistant. Almost none will tell you what it reads. Here is exactly what Vekfinance's coach receives, what it never does, and how you can check for yourself.
The pitch for an AI financial coach is obvious: ask a question in plain English, get an answer about your own money. The catch is that to answer, most assistants are handed your transactions, merchants, balances and account names, which then leave your account for a model provider. For a budgeting app, that is the most sensitive data you have.
Vekfinance took a different route, and it is the reason the brand exists. The coach never receives raw financial data. It reasons over a de-identified summary, and our server fills in the exact numbers afterward. Under every answer there is a disclosure that shows you the exact payload that was sent. We call it Verified Private, and the point is that you do not have to take our word for it.
What the AI is told
When you ask the coach something, the server builds a summary of your situation from your encrypted data and runs it through a chokepoint that allowlists what can leave. What goes out looks like this:
- Coarse bands instead of amounts: a net-worth band and its trend, an income band and a spending band for the last 30 days, a debt-to-income band, and for your debts a count, a total-balance band, weighted and highest APR bands and a payoff-horizon bucket.
- Ratios and buckets: your savings rate as a percentage, whether net cash flow is up or down, emergency-fund runway as a bucket of months, subscription count and a monthly-total band, and for investments a value band and allocation mix.
- Placeholders instead of figures. The model writes answers with tokens like a category-spend placeholder, and our server swaps in the exact dollar amount before you see it. The model itself never sees the number.
- Your question, with identifiers stripped.
What the AI is never told
The allowlist is enforced in code, tested, and fails closed. These never leave your account:
- Individual transactions, merchant names or payees.
- Account names, account numbers or bank names.
- Exact balances, exact income or exact spending figures.
- Your name, email or anything that identifies you.
- Your bank credentials, which we never have in the first place; Plaid access is read-only.
Why it can't make up your numbers
Language models are good at reasoning and bad at arithmetic, and they will confidently invent a figure. Because Vekfinance's coach never has the figures, it cannot hallucinate them. It reasons about which numbers matter and emits placeholders; the server resolves each placeholder from your actual data with deterministic code. The result is an answer that reads naturally and contains only real values.
See the receipt yourself
Under every coach answer there is a disclosure, See exactly what the AI was told. Open it and you get three views: what was sent, what was explicitly withheld, and the raw payload. It is read from the same audit log the request wrote, so it cannot drift from what actually happened. No other budgeting app we know of shows you this.
The rest of the privacy stack
The AI boundary sits on top of the basics. Your database is encrypted at rest with AES-256, bank tokens and two-factor secrets get a second layer of encryption, bank access is read-only through Plaid, sign-in supports passkeys and app-based two-factor, and there are no ads, no ad pixels and no data sales. You can export everything or hard-delete your account on demand. The AI is used for the coach, the one-line health score explainer, the monthly-close insight and portfolio analysis, nothing else, and categorization is deterministic rather than AI-driven.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI model does Vekfinance use?
The coach runs on a model from Anthropic (Claude). Anthropic is one of only two third parties that ever touch your data, the other being Plaid for bank connections; billing runs through Stripe and email through Resend without financial data.
Does the AI train on my data?
No. We do not train models on your data, and the data the model receives is de-identified bands and ratios in the first place.
Can the AI see my transactions?
No. Transactions, merchants, balances and account names are on the deny list enforced by the egress chokepoint. The AI only sees coarse bands, ratios and placeholders.
How do I verify this?
Ask the coach anything, then open the disclosure under its answer. It shows the exact payload that was sent for that answer, read from the audit log.
Is the AI optional?
Yes. Every budgeting, debt, savings and reporting feature works without ever opening the coach. The AI is there when you want to ask a question.
